TIME and SHADOW
Concept of site-specific performances and installation by Nona Ciobanu
Three cultures converging in a fourth, drawn by a common preoccupation with the nature of time, light and shadow, brings artistic partners from the U.S., Hungary and Romania for creative experimentation and collaboration.
Time/Light/Shadow is conceived as site-specific work involving live performers, design, new music, choreographic, multimedia-film-video and dramaturgic elements.
This project growed out of a series of residencies begun at a 2003 planning retreat in the Transylvanian mountains of Romania, following a year of exchange visits between the three artist-directed companies. The collaboration manifested again in the mountains and rainforests of Chiapas, Mexico, in 2006, with 17 participating artists from Romania, Hungary, Mexico and the U.S. The Chiapas project clarified the importance of locating the 2007 residency to Santa Fe Art Institute, U.S., in a physical and social environment that offered powerful design and historical elements which extended the creative exploration from ancient and contemporary Mexico back to ancient and 20th/21st century North America.
Coming from four cultural points on a compass, the artists focused on the question: where will there be an amalgam, parallel, synchronicity or contrapuntal rhythm? Fascination with each other’s visions inspired the artists from the four countries to create “open valences,” to grow in unexpected ways, going beyond their parameters. They found it intriguing to apply new lenses to their work, challenge boundaries, revealing the links between cultures, nature and cosmos.
